Different Thought

Sale-a-Day

All I want to know: “did I sell something today?”

Ever heard the phrase, “what gets measured gets managed?”

I’d always paid it lip service. Especially when it came to business metrics. “Yeah, sure I measure that.” When what I really meant was, “yeah, sure those important metrics are piling up in a spreadsheet somewhere and it’s been months since I actually looked at it.”

Ever been there?

There’s thousands of metrics you could track as a business owner. But I wanted something simple. Something that wouldn’t take more than a few moments to look at and would give me a picture of the healthy of my business.

So I started tracking daily sales. Not the dollar amount. A simple, “did we sell anything today?” Yes or no. Black and white. No hedging or squirting around the question. In other words, is all this daily business activity actually creating dollars-and-cents conversions?

The picture you see above is my actual “Sale-a-Day” dashboard in Notion. It’s one of the handful of docs I look at every day. The concept is super simple:

  1. When I sell something I get a green check (and multiple green checks mean multiple sales)

  2. When I don’t, I get a red X

I used to input the numbers by hand. But now I’ve got some automation built into it via Zapier. Nothing complicated. Very simple.

Developing this dashboard has brought second- and third-order benefits I wasn’t anticipating. (There’s also a gamification aspect to it—but that’s a different topic for another day.)

See, sales are a lagging metric. Meaning, sales are what show up after the work gets done. This dashboard has forced me to pay attention to the leading metrics, such as:

  • If there’s a “red X” streak, what caused the disruption in sales?

  • If we have multiple sales across several days, what did we do different?

  • How do we recreate that environment?

  • Who’s buying? Where did they first come into contact with us? What do they do after they make the first purchase?

I’ve found the “Sale-a-Day” dashboard to be the most impactful metric I look at on a daily basis.

Over to you: do you have something similar set up in your biz? What’s one of your most important metrics?

“The Overton window is the range of policies politically acceptable to the mainstream population at a given time. It is also known as the window of discourse.”
