There is a man out there who lives the life of your dreams. Does that not leave you restless? Most men sleep fine knowing their dreams will remain dreams. But some men, refuse to have anything less than everything. We will either live the life of our dreams or die trying.

Different Thought

The Simple CEO

It’s never been easier to be a CEO. It’s never been more difficult to be a CEO. Long-live the CEO!

A CEO is the Chief Executive Officer—the person with whom the buck stops. Most of us think of a high-powered individual in a suit. Snugly nestled in their opulent corner office (golden handcuffs optional but encouraged).

The CEO is the person responsible for the whole company—employees, vision, results. Everything. But the digital age is forcing us to rethink this stereotype. Even a business with one employee (read: you) still has a CEO (read: also you).

I’ve heard terms like “solopreneur” or “freelancer” to describe one-person businesses. But these terms conjure up images of a lonely person hocking just enough of their wares to get by. Relationships are too big a burden. So they only ever get as far as their hustle can carry them. It feels myopic, selfish, and entitled.

A better term is one I’m calling The Simple CEO. The Simple CEO is often a one-person business. But their mindset is different from the solopreneur. Here’s how:

The Simple CEO builds a team.

Hiring employees is so last century. Simple CEOs know they have 24/7 access to high-quality virtual assistants, designers, and coders. Many are available via contracted retainers or as subscription services. No W2s necessary.

The Simple CEO monetizes their wisdom.

They sell coaching, consulting, courses, info products, memberships, and services. Emphasizing the monetization of their knowledge allows them to keep costs low and margins high.

The Simple CEO is a master at delegating.

They know how to document their thoughts, systems, and processes and pass it on to someone else on their team. Typically a VA. They don’t get encumbered by repetitive tasks. They focus on what Perry Marshall calls “$10,000 per hour tasks” and delegate everything else.

The Simple CEO works on their business, not in it.

The biggest indicator of a Simple CEO is the ability to architect their business to their liking. They’re not bogged down in fulfillment. They’ve learned how to leverage their wisdom and other people’s time to build something bigger than themselves. They spend more time envisioning their future and building it than they do fulfilling.

In practice, there’s little difference between a solopreneur and a Simple CEO. The difference often comes down to mindset. Are you in this to build something you and you alone enjoy? Or are you in this to build something bigger than yourself, even if you’re the only ‘self’ employed in your business?
