If This Isn't Nice

When he found himself in a pleasant moment, Kurt Vonnegut would reportedly say aloud:

If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.

I’ve been trying this out lately.

Whether it’s watching the rain fall outside my office window, finishing a great meal with my family, sweating in the sauna at the gym, or enjoying a vanilla flat white—I will literally stop and say out loud:

If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.

It’s a forcing function, I guess. It forces my brain to slow down and consciously acknowledge the moment. A pleasant moment. A moment that comes and goes with no promises it’ll ever return.

The best part? The more I build the habit, the more pleasant moments I seem to have.

And verbalizing it externally is a key piece of the puzzle (it’s the Speech-Act Theory on full display).

So sometime this week, when you catch yourself in a pleasant moment, I encourage you to say out loud…

If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.
